How to Fix a Stator for a Washer That Will Not Agitate

The stator in your washer works with the rotor to create an electromagnetic field, which causes the tub to rotate. If the windings on the stator are damaged, it needs to be replaced. You can use the information below to learn how to inspect the stator and replace it, if necessary.

What is a Stator? Where is it Located?

The stator is an important part, as it is used to rotate the tub during the wash cycle. The stator works with the rotor to create an electromagnetic field, which causes the tub to rotate. On a front- load washer, the stator is found at the back of the washer, directly behind the panel and underneath the rotor.

How to Tell if the Stator is Damaged

If the windings on the stator are damaged, the stator needs to be replaced.

How to Access and Remove the Stator

  1. Disconnect the power and water supply to the washer, and then pull the machine out from the wall to access the back panel.
  2. Remove the back panel from the washer.
  3. Remove the bolt that holds the rotor in place and remove the rotor.
  4. Once the rotor is out of the way, you have access to the stator.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts, the wire harness, and the rotor positioning sensor from the stator.

How to Install a New Stator

  1. Attach the rotor positioning sensor onto the new stator, lining up the tabs and snapping it into place.
  2. Reattach the wire harness.
  3. Line up the stator assembly on the tub shaft, push it into place, and secure with mounting bolts.
  4. Reinstall the rotor and the back panel.
