How to Fix a Timer for a Dryer That Is Too Hot

The timer allows users to set the desired length of time for the dryer to operate. If it is faulty or damaged, the timer can be stuck in the "on" position. This means that the heating element and other components of the dryer will continue to operate when the appliance is supposed to be off, causing the dryer to overheat. A faulty timer may also override the dryer's safety features such as its high-limit thermostat, so that it will not be able to shut off the dryer when its internal temperature is too high. You would need to test your dryer's timer if you suspect that it is defective. You may do so with a multimeter.

What is the Timer and Where is it Located?

The timer appears as a dial on your dryer. It ensures that electricity is routed to the right components, according to the stage of the dryer’s cycle. If your dryer is overheating, your timer may be faulty and not moving through the dryer’s settings properly. The timer is typically found on the console panel of the dryer.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Timer

  1. As with all repairs, begin by unplugging your dryer. If you have a gas dryer, shut off the gas supply and disconnect the gas lines.
  2. Remove the access door of the console panel.
  3. Remove the timer knob by pulling it out of its shaft.
  4. Remove the timer motor by unthreading any mounting screws securing it.
  5. Disconnect the wires on the timer motor using needle-nose pliers.

How to Test the Timer

  1. Set your multimeter to read in ohms on the lowest setting (some devices call this mode “RX1” or “X1”).
  2. Touch the probes onto the wire terminals and check the reading – a good timer reads between ‘2000’ and ‘3000’ ohms.
  3. Replace your timer if it reads otherwise.

How to Install a New Timer

  1. Reconnect the wires to the new timer motor.
  2. Insert the timer motor into the console and secure it.
  3. Replace the timer knob.
  4. Replace the access door of the console panel.
  5. Push the dryer back into position.
