How to Fix the Idler Pulley for a Dryer With a Drum Not Spinning

The idler pulley helps keep the dryer belt tight and in place as it moves around the drum. If the pulley becomes worn or damaged, it can cause the belt to slip, which can prevent the drum from spinning. If your drum is not spinning well and it is accompanied by a squeaking sound, this may be an indication of a worn idler pulley. Using this simple guide, 3D images, and video tutorials, you can learn how to locate the idler pulley, inspect it, and replace it if it is no longer fully functional.

How to Diagnose the Idler Pulley in a Dryer

You will need to access the idler pulley inside your dryer to visually inspect it. If your idler pulley is worn down, it will need to be replaced.

What is an Idler Pulley?

The idler pulley is a small, wheel-like part that is connected to a spring-loaded arm. It is responsible for keeping the drive belt tightly gripped around the drum and motor pulley by keeping it under tension. This prevents the belt from slipping off when the dryer has a load in it. Over time, the idler pulley may succumb to wear and tear, as it typically spins at high speeds.

Where is the Idler Pulley Located?

The idler pulley in a dryer is located near the motor, on the bottom of the dryer cabinet.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Idler Pulley in a Dryer

  1. Begin by unplugging your dryer from the outlet for your safety.
  2. Lift the top off your dryer and lean it back against the machine.
  3. Pull the front panel up and off the machine. It may be held in place with mounting screws which you will need to remove first.
  4. Remove the drum from your dryer by pulling it out carefully to access the pulley.
  5. Visually inspect the pulley for any damage or signs of wear and tear. Try to spin the wheel and see if it turns smoothly and without any loud noises.
  6. If there is no damage or squeaking sound, then you will need to investigate another part of your dryer. If it shows sign of damage, you will need to replace it.

How to Install a New Idler Pulley

  1. Reach into the machine and press down on the old pulley to release/unthread the belt.
  2. Once the belt is free, pull out the pulley.
  3. Install the new pulley in the same position and loop the belt around the new pulley.
  4. Rotate the drum to make sure the belt is aligned.
  5. Fit the front panel back on the machine and reconnect the lid switch wires.
  6. Secure the top of the dryer back on to the machine.
  7. Plug in your dryer, and your repair is complete.
