how do I reconnect the top grillpiece as I took it out for cleaning. No matter how I try the grill cover does not close.

Hi Alan, thank you for reaching out. We would suggest following these general instructions for reinstalling the upper warming rack: Slip the long protrusions on the sides of the rack through the holes in the sheet metal cover of the grill. Slip one side first and then move to the other side. Now, squeeze the moveable part of the grill slightly and hook the ends into the bosses that are on either side of the grill body. Once it is installed properly, the grill cover will easily close. We hope this helps!
