How to Fix a Rotor Position Sensor for a Washer That Will Not Agitate

The rotor position sensor monitors the direction and speed of the spinning rotor and communicates this information to the electronic control board. If this part is damaged, your machine may not spin at all or at the correct speed. If you’re experiencing this sort of issue with your washer, this sensor may have failed. Using the information below, you can determine if the rotor positioning sensor is the cause of your washer issue, and how to replace it, if necessary.

What is a Rotor Position Sensor? Where is it Located?

The rotor position sensor monitors the direction and speed of the spinning rotor and communicates this information to the electronic control board.

This part is found clipped to the stator, found underneath the rotor at the back of a front-load washing machine.

How to Access and Remove the Rotor Position Sensor

  1. Disconnect the power and water supply to the washer, and then pull it out from the wall to access the back panel.
  2. Remove the back panel from the washer.
  3. Remove the bolt that holds the rotor in place and remove the rotor.
  4. Once the rotor is out of the way, you have access to the stator, onto which the rotor position sensor is clipped.

How to Install a New Rotor Position Sensor

  1. Attach the rotor position sensor onto the new stator, lining up the tabs and snapping it into place.
  2. Reattach the wire harness.
  3. Line up the stator assembly on the tub shaft, push into place, and then secure it with mounting bolts.
  4. Reinstall the rotor and the back panel.
