How to Fix the Selector Knob for a Dryer That Will Not Start

If you’re having issues with your dryer starting, this might indicate a problem with your dryer’s selector knob. The selector knob is responsible for communicating with other parts within your dryer, like the control board and timer, to direct your dryer to whatever cycle or program you’ve chosen. When it’s broken or damaged, it can cause those signals to become interrupted and prevent your dryer from working properly. In some cases, if the selector knob is stuck on a specific cycle or operation, you will be unable to select any specific cycles as it will only execute a single function. In any case, it is important that you replace the selector knob so you can go back to having dry clothes, and we have just the guide below to help—with 3D renderings, videos, and step-by-step instructions!

What is a Selector Knob?

The selector knob is usually a piece of plastic or metal that’s attached to your dryer’s user interface that allows you to select different drying cycles, preferences, and operations for your dryer.

Where is the Selector Knob Located?

The selector knob is attached to the user interface of your dryer—whether that’s on top or on the front of your dryer. If you need assistance finding yours, please refer to the 3D diagram below.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Selector Knob in a Dryer

  1. Grip the knob on its sides, and pull on the knob itself to remove it from the user interface.
  2. Once removed, inspect the inside of the knob for any damage done to the inner plastic housing.
  3. If the knob’s inner housing is damaged or missing its metal insert and can’t function properly, the knob will need to be replaced.

How to Test a Selector Knob

  1. Remove the knob from its shaft and flip it over, examining if it has any cracks in its plastic.
  2. Take a close look at the metal insert of the knob. Sometimes this component of the selector knob slips out if you have removed the knob before to clean it. This piece cannot be ordered separately, and you need to replace the entire knob if that has been misplaced.

How to Install a New Selector Knob

  1. To install the new knob, simply insert it onto the shaft on which the old knob was mounted.
  2. Once the knob is on, turn it and make sure the dryer changes cycles. Your repair is now complete!
