How to Fix the Idler Pulley for a Dryer That Will Not Start

If your dryer won’t start, it may be because of a problem with its idler pulley. An idler pulley that is broken or damaged in any way can cause various problems with your dryer’s belt and belt system, since the idler pulley provides tension to the belt. In this event your dryer would be unlikely to start. If you suspect your dryer’s idler pulley is malfunctioning, we have the guide for you, to help you find and diagnose your pulley, and figure out if it is the reason why your dryer will not start.

What is an Idler Pulley?

An idler pulley is a component within your dryer’s belt system. It helps to rotate the inner tub during the drying cycle. Pulleys vary in size and appearance. Their usual job is to add tension to the belt.

Where is the Idler Pulley Located?

The location of idler pulleys varies from model to model, but it’s probably at the bottom of your dryer, underneath the inner tub. For more assistance in finding it, refer to the 3D diagram below. To find its exact location, refer to your user manual.

FIX TIP

FIX TIP

Before you begin the repair, it’s recommended that you remove your dryer’s lint screen. Remember to disconnect your dryer from its gas supply and wall outlet before beginning any repairs.
  1. Unplug your dryer from the wall outlet, and turn off and disconnect any gas lines.
  2. Disconnect and remove the top portion of your dryer.
  3. Remove the front panel of your dryer. You may have to undo some screws.
  4. Reach underneath the drum and disengage the belt.
  5. Remove the drum of your dryer by its belt.
  6. You should now be able to remove the idler pulley.
  7. Inspect the pulley for any signs of damage or excessive wear.
  8. Try spinning the wheel on the pulley. If it doesn’t spin freely or if there is any resistance, it must be replaced.

How to Test an Idler Pulley

Use your finger to spin the idler pulley and watch if it rotates smoothly. If it is turning stiffly because there is thread or other gunk caught in it, clean out the pulley. If you notice that the pulley squeaks while the dryer is running, you will need to replace it as soon as possible.

How to Install a New Idler Pulley

  1. Install the new pulley in the same position as the previous pulley.
  2. Reinstall the drum within the dryer cabinet.
  3. Connect the belt around the pulley, and around the drum.
  4. Align the belt by rotating the drum.
  5. Place and secure the front panel of your dryer, and reconnect any cable or wire harnesses.
  6. Connect and secure the top portion of the dryer, and insert the lint filter. Your repair is now complete!
