How to Fix the Drum Rollers for a Noisy Dryer

The drum rollers inside your dryer are held in place by a bearing that should remain well lubricated. Over time, this bearing can begin to run dry, leaving the rollers vulnerable to friction damage. The drum rollers are also prone to wear and tear from the weight and movement of the drum. Worn-down rollers can create a squeaking or chirping sound whenever they are in use. If left untreated, the noise can become louder and turn into a thumping or rattling. You may also notice that your clothes have black streaks on them. Therefore, if you suspect that your rollers are faulty, it is best to investigate the problem sooner rather than later!

What are Drum Rollers?

The drum rollers are responsible for supporting the drum while it rotates. They spin on their shaft whenever the drum spins, which allows the drum to turn smoothly and without noise.

Where are the Drum Rollers Located?

The drum rollers are found on a shaft on the back of the dryer drum.

What Type of Noise Can You Expect?

As drum rollers start to wear out, they would produce a squeaking or chirping sound. Once they are broken, you would hear a thumping or rattling noise whenever your dryer is running.

How to Access and Remove the Drum Rollers

  1. Disconnect the dryer from the electrical outlet before you begin any repair.
  2. Lift the top panel off the dryer and lean it back.
  3. Remove the front panel of the dryer and set it aside.
  4. Disconnect the wiring harness.
  5. Remove the belt from around the idler pulley and motor shaft.
  6. Pull the drum out from the dryer cabinet.
  7. Locate the drum roller assembly, which is typically found at the rear of the dryer drum.
  8. Disconnect the drum roller from the shaft and pull it out of the machine.
  9. Inspect the roller. If the drum roller is damaged, you will need to replace it with a new one.

How to Install New Drum Rollers

  1. Before you place the new roller in position, be sure to thoroughly clean and lubricate the shaft.
  2. Place the new roller onto the shaft and secure it in place.
  3. Slide the drum back into the cabinet and ensure it is aligned with the new roller.
  4. Place the belt back on the pulley and motor shaft and ensure it is well fitted around the drum.
  5. Reconnect the wiring harness.
  6. Reinstall the front panel of the dryer and manually spin the drum to check that it is positioned well.
  7. Reconnect your dryer to the electrical outlet, and your repair is complete!
