How to Fix the Drum Seal for a Dryer With a Drum Not Spinning

The drum seal is not among the most commons causes of a dryer failing to spin. However, it can potentially play a role in the problem. The drum seal prevents the drum from banging on the dryer housing. It is prone to tearing and friction damage over time. It can also slip off the drum if the adhesive holding it in place starts to loosen. If the seal is compromised, your drum may not turn as smoothly and can become quite noisy as it scrapes along the dryer housing. Do not use your dryer without the drum seal, as this leaves the drum vulnerable to serious damage.

Follow along using this guide to find out how to locate your drum seal and fix your drum issues in no time!

How to Diagnose the Drum Seal in a Dryer

The best way to find out if your drum seal is the cause of the spinning problem is to visually inspect the seal. This video shows you how to look for signs of wear-and-tear along the drum seal:

What is a Drum Seal?

The drum seal is a thin felt/rubber strip that runs around the circumference of the drum. It sits between the drum and dryer housing and creates a seal that prevents air from escaping the drum. It is also responsible for ensuring that the drum slides on the front panel smoothly and does not hit the dryer housing when it spins.

Where is the Drum Seal Located?

The drum seal is typically located at the front of the dryer between the drum and dryer housing. It may also be located on the rear of the drum, depending on your model of machine.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Drum Seal in a Dryer

  1. To prevent electrical hazards, shut off the power supply to your dryer.
  2. Remove the main top of your dryer.
  3. Detach the front panel to access the drum; you may need to disconnect the wires for your lid switch to do this.
  4. Remove the drive belt from the idler pulley and motor pulley and let it hang loose.
  5. Release the drum from the drum Seal by sharply lifting the drive belt from the top and pulling the drum out from the front of the dryer.
  6. Remove any mountings screws or clips holding the rear drum Seal in place.
  7. Inspect the drum Seal for any signs of wear and tear.

How to Install a New Drum Seal

  1. Take your new drum Seal and place it in position before reinstalling the screws/clips to hold it in place.
  2. Reinstall the drum in the machine by slowly pushing it in through the front.
  3. Fit the drive belt around the drum (remember, the smooth side of the belt stays up).
  4. Fit the drive belt over the idler pulley and around the motor pulley, ensuring that the belt maintains tension well.
  5. Give the drum a little spin to see that it moves freely.
  6. Place the front panel back on the machine.
  7. Place the main top back on.
  8. Plug your machine in, and your repair is complete.
