How to Fix a Dispenser Motor for a Washer That Will Not Dispense

If your washing machine is not dispensing detergent properly, it might be the fault of your detergent dispenser motor. A faulty or malfunctioning dispenser motor will cause your washer to either not dispense the proper amount of detergent or not dispense it at all. Since the motor controls how much water ultimately enters into your dispenser drawer from the valves, if it malfunctions or is bad, your clothes likely won’t be much cleaner than they were when they first entered the washer, and there will be residue left in the drawer. To help with this repair process, we have a step-by-step guide below so you can get back to washing!

What is a Dispenser Motor?

A detergent dispenser motor is a device that allows water to run through the drawer at the correct time during the cycle so that the detergent is properly dispensed.

Where is the Dispenser Motor on my Washer Located?

Dispenser motors are located within the top housing of front load washing machines. Per the image below, the dispenser motor is located between the inlet valves and the detergent drawer.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect a Washer Dispenser Motor

  1. Disconnect the power supply and ideally use a screwdriver to remove the top of your washer.
  2. Depending on your model, you may be able to use your flat head screwdriver to simply pull off the plastic housing around your dispenser motor, or you might have to remove one or more screws.
  3. Before disconnecting any wires, we recommend taking a picture of the existing wires for future reference.
  4. You can check your dispenser motor with a multimeter to ensure continuity and to make sure it’s functioning properly.
  5. Using a set of pliers, you can attempt to rotate the gear reduction mechanism to check if it’s seized.
  6. Depending on whether the internal mechanism is seized, or if the dispenser motor still has continuity, you'll need to replace the dispenser motor.

How to Test the Dispenser Motor

One way to know if your dispenser motor is not functioning correctly is to refer to your user manual for any error codes that signal a dispenser motor issue. In addition, if after a full cycle there is still soap, bleach, or fabric softener in your detergent tray, this could be the issue.

How to Install A New Dispenser Motor

  1. Reconnect the wires in the same way as they were connected before.
  2. Secure the motor to the back of the dispenser housing in the same position it was before, attaching any clips or plastic clamps appropriately. Your repair is now complete!
