How to Fix Agitator Directional Cogs for a Washer That Will Not Agitate

If you have a top-load washer with a dual action agitator, the top portion rotates in one direction, while the bottom part rotates in the other. The agitator directional cogs are what help the top half to turn. If the cogs (also known as dogs) have worn out, then the top portion won’t turn. If you are experiencing this issue, the information below can help you resolve it. We've put together step-by-step guides and instructional videos to help you through this repair.

What are Agitator Directional Cogs? Where are they Located?

On top-loading washers that use a dual action agitator, it is possible for the upper part of the agitator to become disengaged from the bottom portion. The upper part is driven by directional cogs or "dogs" that are made of hard plastic and can wear out from hard use. They click into a corresponding set of cogs to rotate the top of the agitator one way, and then release while the bottom half of the agitator turns in the opposite direction. This action causes the corkscrew shape of the top part of the agitator to push the clothes down into the bottom of the tub, providing increased turnover of the clothes and better cleaning. The engagement and disengagement action of the cogs wears them smooth eventually, and then the upper half of your agitator can’t move.

How to Tell if the Agitator Directional Cogs are Damaged and How to Inspect Them

If the upper portion of your agitator can turn in either direction, or it makes a grating sound during the wash cycle, then the directional cogs may need to be replaced. If the agitator cogs have worn smooth, they need replacement. Check the bearing support, also made of plastic. The following steps will help you assess the condition of your washer's cogs:

  1. Unplug your washing machine and remove the fabric softener dispenser or top cover, depending on your model.
  2. Locate your agitator cogs. You may need to remove the agitator cap, top, or base, depending on your model, to access the cogs.
  3. Visually inspect the cogs for discoloration, wear, or damage. You should also look to see if any cogs are missing.
  4. If your cogs have any of the symptoms described above, you need a set of replacement agitator directional cogs.

How to Access and Remove the Agitator Directional Cogs from Your Washer

How to Install New Agitator Directional Cogs

  1. There are four cogs, or dogs, and we recommend replacing all four at the same time.
  2. Place the cogs in their designated spot around the cam, and then replace the retainer.
  3. The assembly can then be inserted back into the agitator.
