How to Fix a Lid Switch for a Washer That Has Spinning Issues

A defective lid switch may be the reason why your washer is not spinning. You can tell that the lid switch is damaged if your washer does not agitate, and the motor is not getting any power. To confirm that the lid switch is damaged, you will need to unplug the washer and see if the switch mechanism trips by a lever or actuator when you shut the lid. If the switch does not trip then you will need to investigate further and repair or replace it if necessary.

What is a Lid Switch?

When a washer’s top lid is open, the motor circuit will not operate. This safety feature is crucial to preventing serious injuries, and you should not try to bypass it. Some models of washers may use a magnetic lid switch that does not use a mechanical actuator to trip it. These washers will have a magnet in the lid that will operate the switch when the lid is closed.

Where is the Lid Switch Located?

The easiest way to find your model's lid switch is to start by finding the actuator for the lid switch: it will project from the lid and, when you close the lid, fit into a corresponding slot on the top of the body of the washer. Behind or below this opening will be the lid switch. The switch and actuator can be found on either corner of the top panel. The following 3D rendering shows it in the top left corner.

FIX TIP

FIX TIP

Remember that before handling any electronic appliances to disconnect the power source from your appliance before beginning to avoid electrocution.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect a Lid Switch

  1. You will need to disconnect the power to your washer before beginning this repair and pull the machine away from the wall so you can easily access the back panel.
  2. The lid switch is commonly found mounted on the underside of the top of your washer. The lid of the washer needs to be lifted, as the pin will be engaged with the switch if the lid is in the closed position.
  3. Raise the main top to access the switch. In order to remove the old switch, first disconnect the wire harness and remove the screw holding the grounding wire in place.

How to Test a Lid Switch

  1. Remove the wires from the switch and use your multimeter to check for electrical continuity. If the switch is not supplying power to the motor circuits, you will need to replace it. If the switch does have continuity, you will need to check the selector switch, the timer, and the rest of the motor circuitry to pinpoint the problem.
  2. Set your multimeter to the Rx1 setting, touch the probes to the terminals, and press and hold down the switch button. The multimeter should show a reading of zero or nearly zero.
  3. If your test produces a different result, you will need a replacement lid switch.

How to Install a New Washer Lid Switch

  1. Take the new lid switch and reconnect the grounding wire and the wire harness.
  2. Secure the switch to the underside of the washer top.
  3. Now you can lower down the main top and shut the lid to ensure that the actuator engages with the new switch properly.
