How to Fix a Snubber Ring for a Washer That is Shaking and Moving

The snubber ring is a large to medium-sized ring that is used to reduce the vibrations and movement caused by your washer during the washing or spinning cycles. Excessive moving and shaking within your washer can indicate an issue with the snubber ring.

We have a straightforward guide just below to lead you through the entire repair process from start to finish, and even answer some questions you might have along the way! This repair will require some tools, some patience, and some time! But by the end of it your washer should be working like a charm!

What is a Snubber Ring?

A snubber ring is a large, plastic/rubber ring that is used to reduce the vibrations caused by your washer during the various cleaning cycles. This ring normally reduces your washer’s shaking and moving by absorbing that movement—but if the snubber ring is bad or broken, it’ll cause your washer to move and shake a lot more.

Where is the Snubber Ring Located?

The snubber ring is located between the dome and the leg assembly, usually just above the frame of the washer cabinet. This snubber ring is situated between a few other components, and on your washer may be harder to reach. Check out the 3D-diagram below for a more in-depth look at where to locate your washer’s snubber ring.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Snubber Ring

Due to the complexity and difficulty of removing the parts of your washer to gain access to the snubber ring, it may make sense for you to enlist the services of a professional technician if you want to avoid all the steps involved. However, we have video guides and general instructions to make the process achievable if you want to take it on!

  1. Unplug your washing machine and remove the front panel.
  2. Locate and inspect the snubber. You will need to remove the tub springs to do this.
  3. On the plastic-style snubber, look for signs of white dust on or near the snubber. On the felt style, look for dislodged or dry pads.
  4. If you find either of the symptoms above, you will need a replacement snubber ring.

How to Install a New Snubber Ring

  1. Before installing the snubber, it's important to clean up any debris and residue from the old one, at the base as well as the underside of the superstructure. The best ways to clean up the area can be a simple cleaning solution and a rag, or a cordless drill with a wire brush.
  2. Once the rough debris is removed, the new snubber ring can be set into place.
  3. Take the superstructure, re-set it into place, ensuring that the location of the drain hose is aligned with where it should attach to the pump. This will ensure you're putting things back together in the right location.
  4. Repeat the steps outlined in the access and removal instructions and video above, in reverse order, ensuring you have kept track of all the correct fasteners and screws for the right parts along the way.
  5. Congratulations, your repair is complete.
