How to Fix a Lid Actuator for a Washer That Has Locking Issues

The lid actuator is a part of the lid switch assembly that keeps your washer locked. It is vulnerable to damage from excessive force when opening and closing your washer or from regular use over an extended period. You can check to see if the actuator is damaged by closing the lid of your washing machine and seeing if the lid engages.

What is a Lid Actuator?

The lid switch actuator presses down on the lid switch when you close the washer lid. It activates the lid switch, which tells the washer that the lid is either closed so that the wash cycle can begin, or open so that it can stop the cycle. If the lid switch actuator is defective or damaged, it can prevent your washer from locking or unlocking, as your washer cannot determine whether it is safe to start a cycle.

Where is the Lid Actuator Located?

The lid switch actuator is located under the washer lid.

How to Access and Remove the Lid Actuator

  1. Unplug the washer for your safety.
  2. Open the top of the washer and locate the screw or locking tab (depending on your model), holding the actuator in place on the lid.
  3. Remove the screw or press down on the locking tab using a pair of pliers to release the actuator.
  4. Examine the actuator for any damage. If there is none, you need to investigate a different part of your washer to determine the cause of your washer locking issues.
  5. If it is damaged or worn, you need to discard the actuator and purchase a new one.

How to Install a New Lid Actuator

  1. With your old actuator already disposed of, take your new actuator and line it up with the screw hole or locking tab.
  2. Secure it in place, and then close your washer lid.
  3. Plug the washer back in.
