How to Fix a Tub Ring Gasket for a Leaking Washer

If you find water leaking down the sides of the washer drum, this could be a sign that the tub ring gasket is damaged or not fitted securely. The tub ring is fastened around the top of the washer drum, and it is common for it to come loose. You will need to inspect it to ensure that it is fitted securely and not damaged.

We’ve prepared this guide to help you access the tub ring then find out if it is the cause of the leak and what you can do about it. If you need to replace the tub ring, we will show you how to install a new one and restore your washer to full working condition.

What is a Tub Ring Gasket?

The tub ring gasket, not to be confused with the tub seal, is responsible for preventing water from leaking out of the tub during the wash cycles. When the tub ring gasket is defective or loose, it can cause water to splash out from the top during the washer spin cycle, which results in water leaking down the edges of the washer’s tub.

Where is the Tub Ring Gasket Located?

You can find the tub ring gasket on the upper portion of the tub.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Tub Ring Gasket

  1. As with any repair, be sure you unplug the appliance before beginning and turn off the hot and cold water supply valves.
  2. Remove the front panel of your washer by inserting a putty knife under the main top to release the spring clips that hold the panel in place.
  3. Remove the main top of your washer and set it aside.
  4. Detach the tub ring from the top of the washer tub. It may be held in place by locking tabs.
  5. Once the tub ring is free, examine it for any cracks or damage. If it is indeed damaged, you will need to replace it.
  6. If there is no visible damage, you may need to inspect another part of your washer as a cause of the leak.

How to Install a New Tub Ring Gasket

  1. Follow the steps in “How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Tub Ring Gasket” to remove the damaged tub ring.
  2. Discard the old tub ring and fit the new one over the top of the washer tub. Ensure that any tabs/clips snap firmly back in place.
  3. Lower the top of the washer back onto the machine and secure it in place.
  4. Turn the power supply back on and your repair is complete.
