They are known to wear due to constant rubbing against the commutator, so it should not be a concern if they are in need of a replacement. A worn brush can cause excessive sparks, however a damaged armature can also cause sparks, so you will need to inspect both parts. This is a simple repair that should only take a few minutes. You will need to remove the brush caps, and then align the new carbon brush in the holder with the tabs. You will need a screwdriver to secure the cap.
