Trash Compactor would not stop after cycle and would make a ton of noise
I had a couple of problems with my trash compactor, it was present in the home when we bought it. First it wouldn't turn on, the on/off switch was broken so I replaced the switch and knob assembly. Then the unit would run through a cycle and wouldn't stop at the end and would make a loud banging noise. My directional switch was the suspect at first because it was in bad shape to begin with, looked like it had gotten stuck at some point and bent the arm. I replaced the directional switch and it didn't help. Then I realized that the on/off/start panel showed that the start button was stuck in the on position. This was delivering constant current and wouldn't allow the unit to stop. DON'T spend $150 for a new start/on/off panel. I took the panel off and separated the front from the back to expose the buttons from the inside. The start button was stuck so I took the parts out and reassembled them, they're all little plastic and metal pieces that interlink. After I reassembled the buttons' insides I reassembled the panel and reinstalled it. The unit works fine now. Read more...

Trash Compactor the drawer was very hard to open
In replacing the old partial rusted drawer slides had rusted screw with nuts that spun had to drill them out and replaced front larger bolt and nut the rear screw used a larger sheet metal screw. The wheels and bearing with on easy the instructions showed a modification to remove a tab for the different wheel assembly and installed just like the instructions. When done the drawer will slide out with just touch of your foot on open tab GREAT!! I was looking at buying a new compactor the repair saved me about 700 $. Thanks a lot. The bar that the rollers fit into has a lip on the front.
The lip on the front of the bar had to be bent so it was almost straight out so a wrench could be put on the nut to remove the old roller. There was not room enough to get on the nut with pliers or wrench and turn it. much more difficult than the instructions laid out. Read more...

compactor would not compact and come back up to the starting position
First of all I would like to thank this site for the excellent service we received and the young lady I spoke to in customer service was great. Only the right side was bad, but I changed both sides while I was at it. I left the left side in tacked so I could get the right height on the right side to make sure the ram was level. I took of the two nuts and undid the power nut. At this point I cleaned off the screw rod that the power nut attaches to and screw on the new power nut. I had someone hold up the back of the ram to make sure that I had it level and then put on the cap and attached it with the two small screws, and then repeater the same steps for the left side. Tis compactor is thirty six years old and this is the first time I did any repairs to it and I hope it last another thirty six. Read more...
